Job Description:
General Responsibilities:
The Director of Youth Ministries is responsible for providing ministerial leadership to develop a comprehensive youth ministry that is consistent with the mission and objectives of Southern Hills Christian Church (SHCC). This position will concentrate on the programs for youth and congregation ages 6th through 12th grade. This Director is called to share with youth our perception of God's covenant with us and God's action among us, both in this place and in the world. In addition, the Director is invited to provide vision and leadership for the educational ministries with the youth of this congregation. The Director of Youth Ministries will be encouraged to work as a member of a team, which includes both staff members and lay leaders, sharing ideas and plans, voicing concerns, and working through problems and programs to accomplish the mission of SHCC. They will be expected to work in cooperation with others to develop a comprehensive ministry with youth, which includes elements of spiritual growth, study, mission and reaction.
Director's Responsibilities:
1. Develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate the ministries for youth at SHCC with the guidance of the Youth Council.
2. Report to the Youth Council Chair prior to Cabinet and Board Meetings.
3. Provide direction in the use of program materials, equipment, supplies and space utilization by youth groups.
4. Plan and coordinate special programs and events (retreats, camps, mission projects, and trips, etc.) that involve all youth at various levels of spiritual maturity and encourage participation in fellowship, worship, outreach, evangelism and ministry opportunities.
5. Develop a positive relationship with each youth recognizing their special gifts and talents.
6. Develop a positive relationship with parents and gaurdians of youth, having resources available for them to assist in their spiritual growth as Christian parents.
7. Develop and administer programs to recruit and equip adults to work within the youth programs and serve as an ongoing resource to adult leaders for materials, ideas and coordination.
8. Develop and administer programs that encourage outreach to the youth of community and provide a process to follow-up with youth visitors.
9. Provide leadership in planning and conducting Youth Sunday.
10. Assist with other duties, within the scope of this job description, as assigned by the Supervising Minister.
Qualifications:
Bachelor degree and Youth ministry experience preferred.
Supervision:
The Director of Youth Ministries will report directly to the Supervising Minister. The Supervising Minister will offer support, guidance and resources to equip the Director in their ministry. These two persons will meet on a regular basis for communication, coordination, and evaluation of their programming. The Director will also work in close cooperation with the Director of Children's Ministries to plan and coordinate ministries, and should support their programs in one another's absence. A performance will be conducted annually.
Schedule Exprectations:
This is a part time position entailing a minimum/average of 24 hours per week as specified in the Personnel Policy. The typical workweek for this position will include Sunday morning responsibilities and at least four other days. Days off will be Saturday and one other weekday as approved by the Supervising Minister. Resources will also be provided for continuing education.
Program Oversight:
-Prepare and lead youth lessons
-Recruit and train adult leaders
-Establish and maintain small groups
-Supply curriculum for all small group leaders and/or Sunday School teachers
-Organize, plan, and lead youth activites/trips/special events
-Participate in contemporary worship
-Attend traditional worship service
-Report to Supervising Minister on a regular basis and/or as needed
-Work in conjunction with the Regional and Area Disciples' churches for youth activities
-Work collegially with other youth ministers in Edmond
-Ensure that leaders are present and encourage youth are participation in Sunday School, teaching Sunday School is not a requirement of this position as long as Sunday School teachers are available.
