Using iPhoto to change the size of a picture file (Mac only): If you try to insert a photo from your computer into a page on the SHCC website, you may get a message saying that the file size is too large. To fix this, you need to shrink the size of your photo file on your computer, before you can upload it to the church website. The way you shrink a photo depends on the kind of software you have on your computer, and therefore on the kind of computer. All Macs come with iPhoto. Here are brief instructions for changing a photo's size using iPhoto 6. (The basic principles will be true with other software and Windows programs, but the details will vary.) 1. Choose the photo in iPhoto; click "Edit". 1A. If desired, check the file size by choosing the menu command "Photos->Get Info". You will see a window that shows height, width, and file size. The best size for a photo is below 100k; the pages will load slower if your file is too large. I suggest that you aim for a file size below 40k (and preferably closer to 20k or less). 2. Crop the photo (if desired) by dragging the cursor over it. Then click "crop." Note: Cropping allows you to increase the size of the part of the photo you want to see while decreasing the file size. Therefore, always crop a photo to include only the important parts. 3. Make any other adjustments you like. (color, red-eye, etc.) 4. Close the edit window. 5. With the photo still selected, choose the menu command File -> Export. (In earlier versions of iPhoto, the command is Share -> Export.) 5. If it's not already clicked, click the "File Export" tab 6. In the "FORMAT" menu (below "Images"), choose "jpg" 7. In the "scale images no larger than" boxes, enter a number like 200 or so for a dimension (height or width - just enter one). You may need to click "scale images no larger than" in order to enter a number. Don't worry about the exact size now. You can repeat this process with another number, later. 8. Make sure the "use extension" box is checked. 9. Click "export" 10. In the dialog box that appears, give the file a name (with no spaces or punctuation) and decide where to save it on your hard drive. Then click "OK". Once you have done all that, you can check the result by opening the new file in Preview. Once it is open, choose the menu command "Tools -> Get Info". A document info window will open that shows the file size and dimensions.
